Spandex is the abbreviation for polyurethane fibre, a synthetic fibre whose constituent material contains more than 85% of the components of polyurethane. Trade names include Lycra (Lycra, USA, UK, Netherlands, Canada, Brazil), Neolon (Neolon, Japan), Dorlastan (Dorlastan, Germany), etc. First successfully researched by Bayer in Germany in 1937, DuPont in the USA started industrial production in 1959 and has now sold its spandex industry to Koch Industries in the USA, with a total capacity of around 100,000 tonnes. The total global production capacity of spandex is currently around 600,000 tonnes, while South Korea's Hyosung has a spandex capacity of nearly 120,000 tonnes, making it the world's number one. The first spandex company in China was Yantai Spandex Factory, which started production in 1989. With a current production capacity of around 350,000 tonnes, mainland China is the world's largest producer of spandex.
There are two varieties of spandex, a mosaic copolymer of aromatic diisocyanates and polyester chain segments containing hydroxyl groups (referred to as polyester spandex) and a mosaic copolymer of aromatic diisocyanates and polyether chain segments containing hydroxyl groups (referred to as polyether spandex). Spandex fibres, together with stretch polyolefin fibres and stretch composite fibres are collectively known as stretch fibres.
